Why it Makes Sense to Use Blue Light Lenses

We all learned at school that light is made up of a spectrum of colours. We have all heard about UV light and its harmful effects. However, many people do not realise that artificial blue light (the shortest wavelength) is the nearest in frequency to UV and thus can prove harmful to eyesight, although natural blue light is beneficial to us.

Televisions, computers, phones, tablets and lighting are all devices that are increasingly being linked to the stresses, aches and pains which can afflict the eyes due to the artificial blue light they emit. We are all guilty of checking our phones or tablets before bed and it is now commonly accepted that prolonged blue light exposure before bed affects our sleep. This is why more up to date devices now offer Night Shift to literally change the colours on the screen; blue light at night will trick your body into thinking it doesn’t need to go to sleep, something none of us needs to be tricked into thinking!

Recent research has also made links between migraines and long term eyesight issues and overexposure to blue light.

Help is on hand!

We at lenses in glasses have developed a lens that can filter blue light and therefore reduce risks to your eyesight and eye health. We all have UV protection on our lenses so now is the time to protect our eyes from artificial blue light as well.

What do blue light lenses do?

The lenses we offer block this harmful artificial blue light so it doesn’t ever reach your eyes; your eyes will be protected against blue light from your digital devices thereby delivering better contrast and less eye strain and in doing so will boost your eye health, concentration and vision during the day AND help you sleep better at night.

The proof is in the research!

A new research study by Harvard Business review found evidence that wearing blue light-filtering glasses improved participants sleep, productivity and work outcomes. The participants wearing the blue light filtering lenses were 8% more engaged, 17% higher in displaying helping behaviours, 12% less likely to display negative work behaviour, and proved 8% higher in task performance. The proof is in the numbers!

Want to know more about the science stuff?

Blue light is exactly that: light with blue wavelengths—which are shown beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood. Exposure to all colours of light helps control your natural sleep-and-wake cycle or circadian rhythm. However, blue light messes with your body’s ability to prepare for sleep because it blocks a hormone called melatonin that makes you sleepy.

Blue Light is very close in wavelength to UVA and Infra-Red rays and we all know what we have to do to protect our eyes and skin from these; good sunglasses and a high SPF sun cream.  However, dodging blue light is not so easy!

Kitting out the kids

What with homeschooling in the current climate and schools becoming more and more advanced in using technology to enhance teaching and learning it means children are exposed to a phenomenal amount of blue light in their day to day lives and in addition to this the popularity of such things as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, it seems every child spends long periods looking at a screen of some kind.

Our blue light lenses will protect children’s eyes by filtering out all the harmful blue light they are being regularly exposed to, boosting energy and concentration when needed at school or when at home, whilst helping them to sleep better at night. It may also be worth considering non-prescription blue light blocking lenses so that even non-glasses wearing children can be protected from the onslaught of blue light our modern-day lives create and thus protect themselves from blue light related eye issues in the future.
